Hello,

I was clearing out an old cupboard today and found a tin with loads of old 1p and 2p coins inside it and I noticed all the coins have a small "X" or X shaped symbol stamped onto them and was wondering if anyone knows why they would have been stamped like that?

I don't know where the coins came from as I don't recall ever seeing them and must just have been in the back of the cupboard for years lol.

Thank you.

I took some pictures so you can see what I mean. This is the mark most of them have stamped on them:

For those old coin lovers amongst you I can tell you that all the coins range from: 1877 - 1963 featuring:

Edward VII
George V
George VI
Victoria (1896/1877)
Elizabeth II

No real idea but maybe

each one represents a kiss

or its for some sort of game (when I was at school at the summer fetes we used to play a game which involved dropping old pennies in a bucket of water and had to cover a coin already at the bottom - maybe you had to cover the x)

or someone had a thing with the royals and was putting an x marks the spot.

Its a personal mark. Perhaps gaming tokens? Thecoins are clearly well circulated - perhaps on decimal day someone salvaged some as poker chips.

Those aren't 1p and 2p coins. They're predecimal, most likely halfpennies and pennies (written as ½d and 1d).

As for why they'd be marked, I'm afraid only the person who stamped them would know that now for certain. But there was an old pub game played with halfpennies; perhaps these ones were marked to play the game with, so the bartender wouldn't accidentally give them out in change.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
