I have zero intrest in the new Superman coins, but I was wondering how many other cartoon coins the mint has made and how well they have held their value. The only other ones I know of are the Peanuts coins. By the way I think we need one of these here LOL

Don't think the RCM has ever done a comic book character before; they've left that to lesser Mints. But one can now assume the RCM have lowered themselves to a similar status now. I can only think of one other fictional character on an RCM offering and that was a 25 cent giftware coin featuring Anne of Green Gables. It was a dud. I give them a pass on cheap giftware but putting comic book characters on silver and gold is pathetic (IMO).

I guess the 2010 Olympic mascots would be the closest comparison to date from a cartoon character point of view?
Personally I find the Canadian connection to Superman (the artist half of the creating duo was born in Toronto but moved to the US before Superman was created if I remember correctly) a bit weak to justify commemorative coins.

^^^ not RCM products, though they did sell them. There have been lots of comic, cartoon, movie coins issued by other mints.

Someone at the Mint must have seen that "heritage moment" spot on TV and decided to run with it. Superman's connection with Canada is pretty tenuous at best and given the licensing fees they'll have to sell a boatload to make any money. I won't be buying and I have literally 100s of Superman comics stashed away.

The New Zealand Mint have been doing commens of different themes, including cartoons, for many years. It is worth visiting: http://www.nzmint.com/
