I happened to come across this auction of an I.C.C.S., 1889 quarter, VF-20. Trend price is a mere $1K, however, the final price will be well above that. It shows how well (low mintage=66K) Key date coins with ultra low mintages hold their value$$$.

It is an older ICCS flip, perhaps someone might be thinking of turning that one into a VF-30 in a newer ICCS flip....

I bet someone is banking on the "grade creep" for a VF 30 maybe even EF. Notice the water mark.

I'm the winning bidder on this coin.

I'm building a set of Victorian quarters in F+ grade, and have found the 1889 to be incredibly tough find above G-VG (even more than the 1875). In circumstances like these, I tend to throw trends prices out the window, and bid what I think is needed to buy the coin (since it sold at my max bid price, I suspect someone else had the same idea). I noticed the watermark, but have no intention of upgrading and re-selling the coin. Glenzy hit the nail on the head in the original post; high-grade, low mintage key dates retain their value very well, and in my case, I'll pay premiums to get them.

Nice purchase skelly. You're right about decent '89s being tough to find,Trends underestimates their value,I think you got a bargain,a gorgeous VF30.
