I finally took the plunge. I got an alright price for a fully centered coin with readable legends. I'm going to try some restoration on it when I receive it.

This is a type I've been angling for for years. Minted for the secular games in Rome to celebrate 1000 years of Romes continued power. The cippus on the reverse reads COS III - year 3 of Philips Reign, 1000 AVC. Theres a rarer issue with a fat cippus I could have owned but I've been waitinf for one of these to come along. Its not the nicest, but I think I can work with it. Learn how to remove the black spots etc.

First one I've seen sell under £30! I got it with postage for £28. Its not the nicest example, but its not worn - some of them are in awful condition and still sell for £40+. I've put in an offer for a nicer one as well, but I doubt Ill get that.

I love it when you guys (and gals) post historical tidbits with the coins. It really brings them to life.

Nice catch, Ben!

Masis - thats a nice example! I was wanting one of the really thin Cippus issues (COS overflowing the edges). My example is just the hole filler- ill get a nicer one and sell the previous until I'm ahppy to stop.

Theres so many different issues. You've got She-wolf, lion, stag, goat, elk, hexastyle temples. Theres a Sestertius of the thin Cippus I'm keeping an eye out for.

Its an inscribed Cippus. The senate decreed that the celebrations would be posted to one (or something). They were set up as milestones or funerary monuments - that kind of stuff.

Ive found another one for £28 + shipping but its not so nice. Theres also an alright sestertius going I might save up for.
