This is my 1st post and I wish to seek assistance in identifying a 1859 penny. I have inherited a few hundred pennys from a Canadian collection. This particular penny appears to be brass and has a curious perfect dot between the "O" and the "N" in "ONE".

Thank you in advance for your assistance

Welcome to the forum.

You have what appears to be a late state narrow 9 variety. I have not seen the dot variety between the O and N before. This issue was plagued with die cracks and re-punches, it gets easy to determine the exact die that was used.

Search Vickycents, and you will be brought to the Haxby site, which deals in the varieties of this issue.

I am fairly confident that you do not have the brass variety, as they are extremely rare, and yours has typical bronze patina and colouring vs the yellow colouring of a brass coin.

Thank you for your reply. I am already reading the link that you provided and find that there is a lot to learn about this coin.
