Does anyone know much about these "hard times tokens?" I did some research, but I haven't been able to find out if this variety has a name. Also, this one pictured looks like 37 over 57, or 57 over 37. From what I've read they stopped being made in 1843. Any help?

Not an overdate, likely just a die chip. These were minted in 1837...they would have been of little use in 1857. If you've not read it...http://coinstories.blogspot.com/200...defense.html

Yes, this is now generally recognized as a filled die error (minor error) as opposed to a die cutting error. When it was first cataloged (Rulau, I believe in 2004), it was rated an R7, Rarity 7, as I recall and erroneously listed as a new variety. Even the most studious of catalogers misses a beat, now and then.

I've personally owned at least three of these, and I've since seen a fair number of them on the market. Knowledgeable HTT collectors will pay perhaps a modest premium for a choice specimen, nowadays. I've never seen one of these in high grade, AU or better, and such an example might well fetch a premium price. Of course, any collector who uses the earlier Rulau catalog to attribute this HTT may think he's found a very scarce variety ... This is a very good example of how it can "pay" a collector to network with other collectors before making a substantial buying/selling mistake. Despite the many cataloging and pricing errors that can be found in the 2004 token catalog, I love my dog-eared copy!

On a related note, there are many Civil War token varieties that have been under/over-rated in the catalogs. The market on these puppies has been very slow to adjust. Those who are best attuned to the market on these, dealers and collectors who specialize, stand to profit.

HT-46R.

This variety was "discovered" in 1996. It is presently indeterminate whether the variety was a result of a careless diecutter, or partially filled punch. The specimen is currently listed as R-3 in rarity (Scarce, greater than 200 extant). I'd bet it's even more common; perhaps R-2. It is entirely plausible that these remained in circulation up through the mid 1850s, and maybe even saw circulation once again during the Civil War due to the scarcity of Federal coinage.

The OP's specimen is about VF, but a details grade due to the damage on the reverse 'E' in "CENT". Nevertheless, it is always a nice variety for one to have in their cabinet!

Thanks so much for identifying it! I have read up more on it thanks to one that sold recently on ebay. The seller uploaded a scanned page from some book that helped me learn more about this variety. Now, I paid $16 for this, good investment?

I would pay that... But I know little. I just like the worn look of it.

@Jimmy - The first scanned page (picture #5) is the page I cited. $16 is a fair retail price.
