The thing that jumped out at me first are the first two date digits. They do mot match those of an authentic 1880 cc Morgan. Your picture is a bit blurry in this area, are they by chance damaged?

The reverse also looks very porous.

I would say it's a counterfeit.

The date couldn't be worn could it?

And I'm not sure what you mean about the reverse. I'll stick it to a magnet tomorrow and see if it sticks

Found this on coinfacts;

Die rotation: Specimens of VAM-5 are occasionally seen with the reverse misaligned from 26° to 90° clockwise from normal. Examples are known in Mint State. According to the 3rd edition of the Van Allen-Mallis text, 1878-CC the only Carson City dollar issue known struck from a rotated die.

It's a counterfeit.

The reverse has a grainy look to it. Usually seen on cast counterfeits.

Thanks everyone, sounds disappointing. Didn't get a chance to test it with a magnet though
