I've been trying to find information about my British Token with very limited success. Any help to value and age would be helpful. From what I have learned, the Gardens were 'lost' in the 1890's and this may be a entrance token given to visitors of the gardens/museum. Thanks for your help!

Im not sure if this is the right spot for this topic. Is there a spot on this site for British tokens?

Hamilton's Museum was opened by my GG Grandfather Stephen Hamilton and his family. It was a garden & museum at Buckley Wells, just outside of Bury, Lancashire.

From what I know it was open in the 1850's and the museum moved to another site later in the same decade.

Welcome!
I was hoping someone would shed more light on this token; didn't think it would come from so close to the source!

That is a nice token! I love anything that shows queen Victoria with the young head and 'duck' face.

Thanks for the Welcome :) I found out about the museum & gardens many years ago when my Great Uncle sent me an article from a newspaper about it. But I only found out about the token in recent years when trying to find more info.

This is awesome! I never expected to hear from a relative of the creator of the Victoria Gardens. WhatI have derived from this information is that this token must have been minted in the early 1850's when the Victoria gardens were located in Bury. During the late 1850's, the gardens and Hamilton museum moved to an unknown location where they eventually closed in the mid 1890's. I've located many tokens from this time period but only one other token like the one I've pictured. Many of the common tokens of this time frame appear to sell through on line auctions in the under $10 range. More unusual token from this time frame with the young (duck head) queen Victoria sell for $50 to $80. I'd be interested in finding out if others have this particular token or is this truly one of only a few known examples.

My family owned pubs in Bury & just the museum moved to one of those in the late 1850's. I have no idea what happened to the gardens after they left, but a parks & gardens website does say the gardens no longer existed in the 1890's. My GG Grandfather was actually a Professor of Music. One of his brothers was a builder.
I contacted a coin dealer in the UK several months ago about the tokens and they advised me that they are not considered rare and they do come up for sale from time to time. One was sold just recently on ebay in the UK for 22 pounds and it did seem in better condition.
