I am thinking there should be a commemorative coin celebrating the milestone of the Voyager 1 Spacecraft reaching interstellar space. It is really almost unimaginable we have sent a man made object that far! It's so Star Trekkie....lol It's also interesting the craft is still 40,000 years away from the nearest star even though it's travelling 100,000 mph!!

Interesting idea, it is certainly a space exploration "first" to which the US can stake an undeniable claim. My guess, however, is that it would be a long shot at this point.

NASA-related commemorative coin proposals haven't fared well in the past with Congress â€" we couldn't even get a coin approved for the 25th anniversary of the first man on the moon!

The available slots for commemorative coins are filling up for the next several years with several active proposal already being discussed in Congress. I'm thinking that NASA would need to hire a VERY good Congressional lobbyist to get a Voyager coin approved!

This should be no problem, considering how well they are budgeted (sarcasm).

This is my idea:

The Mint should make a silver dollar commem for Voyager, for exiting our solar system. And the clad half dollar companion piece is the Arecibo Telescope, it is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

As long as we are dreaming of commemorative issues, I would like to see one for Edwin Hubble in 2023.

The Hubble could be the $5 gold coin to round off the set.

Do you think anyone of the Mint reads this forum?

@welder: I'm afraid it doesn't matter much if folks from the US Mint read this forum - they don't decide what commemorative coins are struck.

Congress needs to pass a bill for a commemorative coin and the President must sign it into law before such a coin can be struck.
