Wowza, look at this lot. I believe FR has an example of the bottom left.

In my novice opinion, not real coins of the period.

I would say all real but all tooled. The bottom left extensively so. This produces the off look. But who cares with designs like those!

The first thing is the detail on the top coin is out, the bust is nice but the lettering looks like it had been drawn in pencil at junior school. Secondly the same is true on the lower coin but in reverse, lettering ok bust terrible.

They are not original. I am not questioning the experts here but they look similar to the items being made at Ollerton for visitors. Maybe I should post a picture of a coin to see if we think it's original or not?

From the listing...
Quote:
This coin features the longest obverse legend on record for Roman coins at 52 letters. What makes this coin really valuable is all 52 letters are legible. You can buy a similar coin right here on ebay for $790. Check it out at...

That is slimey, if not against ebay policies on linking to another sellers listing.

Quote:
These coins are part of the ex-Sam Mansourati Collection that I picked up a while back. All three for less than $100 a coin... Ow that hurts.

Aw, all better now, $165 in profit as of 23:10 GMT.

I wouldn't touch any of these. There is a variety of tooling and heavy smoothing going on here that has to bring in to question where the real coin starts and ends with these examples.

As a novice maybe maridvnvm has hit the nail on the head. They are either repro, my opinion or have been sanded down with a drill in an attempt to make them look better..... fail.

Heating up here! Fake, or real? I'm going real, but as I said before, tooled. The crudeness you're attributing to fakery might actually be the hideous tooling job which makes that whole area of the coin fake in my opinion. But hey, the oricalcum in the middle is still 100% untouched roman.

I am not so sure Ben. I have done a lot of research since joining here and have learnt a heck of a lot about this period in particular. There is a guy that owns a workshop a few miles from me and is churning out 'Roman' coins, thats all he does all day long, 7 days a week and boy, let me tell you he sells to some of the highest regarded collectors in this area so they can sell on.
I have a few of his coins that he gave me as a gift, I have had to put them well away from my others as I have no idea how to tell them apart!

At first glance I was inclined to go with the 'extensively retooled' theory .......
But after looking at the real deal (below).
I think the 'bogus' proposition might be more likely !

Amazing-Trajan-Set

The patina seems to be genuine on these three coins, thick green and 'exquisite'.
But is it real ? Or some type of baked on enamel ?

I don't like them as from the close up they appear quite different than in the group photo.

If they do turn out to be fake which we will probably never find out unless similar ones show up on a fake report. They fooled me.

I would also say that "they fooled me". The group shot looks impressive enough. Only after I checked the close ups and compared it with something in hand did the style look seriously 'iffy' . At best seriously monkeyed with ...... At 'wurst' I would say someone is getting off a decent fake with patina added to help disguise the ruse.
