Picked this up at a LCS today. What's everyone's thoughts on grade?

VF30 Looks like there's light corrosion on both sides of the coin, could be old dirt kind of hard to tell. Also, there appears to be die cracks at the top of the 'F' in OF and 'M' in AMERICA, which could help find the variety.

The coin has good eye appeal and no unbearable problems, great deal at $11.

i think its a little stronger at VF35. could use some verdicare to clean it up and get rid of the gung. this would also help preserve the coin. great deal at $11

Thanks Panzaldi and all. Verdicare will be used on this as it does appear as though it's just dirt. I was quite surprised when I found this coin at a LCS yesterday at only 11 dollars. Also picked up Newcomb's United States Copper Cents book as well and have been having fun identifying the different varieties of all my old copper. I took yours and others advice in trying to locate some of these books and this one came in cheap as well yesterday at the coin show.

I think you need to do some legwork on it - it LOOKS like the N4 (repunched date) variety -----Burton

Quote: I do not think it is a repunched date.....well placed die chip on the 8? Well - if you zoom your browser to 400% (and I know this is not the best photo and enlarging it leads to artifacts, etc.) there is something there: under the 4 and the 6 and maybe on the 8... or it could be crud. EDIT: to fix the missing right bracket on the quote...

When I get home from work today I'll take another shot of just the date area. I never even noticed the additions by the eight or the four. Definitely warrants another tight macro shot. So stay tuned! Is the N4 or restruck date a more difficult or more common variation? Thanks again......
