I have one proof set that I bought with a crack in the plastic.. I might open that one up if I ever have a reason to.. but at this time it will stay the way it is.
I dont think I would ever open one that isn't already damaged.
Side question.. Do ALL proof coins come in the plastic sets or is there a way to buy them unpackaged?

as far as I know the only way to get a poof coin is in a set or from someone like me who breaks open the sets.  Edited by cjspearsdog

I just got a 1962 Proof LMC from the bank in a roll. And I am very glad I did. It is a DDO, and whoever put this one back in the pond, wasn't looking too well... |

The Brits often make proof sets with individually screw encapsulared coins.
When such proof set cases are broken, and the coins removed from their capsules, the capsules become available to house other coins. I have taken great advantage of this to screw encapsulate coins for protection, that otherwise would never had the protection of a capsule. Quite often, I can get matching individual cases that exactly fit the size of the capsule as well.
A pre used case with matching size capsule usually cost me no more than three dollars. Cheap and very effective protection for a coin that may be valued for a thousand dollars ore more!
I shy away from slabbed coins, and so some of the most valuable coins that I have are now in screw capsules stored separately in a safe, away from the main body of my collection.

Every dealer in my locality sells individual modern US Proof coins broken out of Sets. Only problem is, there are occasions where buying the Set a coin came from is cheaper than buying the individual coin from the same dealer. Just last Friday, I saw a 1973-S Clad Ike in a 2x2 for $8 and a problem-free 1973 Proof Set for $7.00, at the same dealer... Last year, another dealer had a 2005-S Sacagewea in a 2x2 for $10, and a full 2005 Clad Proof Set for $8  Edited by DNA

I get close to the same for IKE's on the bay and a couple bucks for quarters and 3-4 for halves. That is why I break them apart, I get more selling the individual coins.

Looks like I may have to change my reply. A few 7070 album picture threads have given me the itch to start one of my own (when the new album comes out). Since I already have multiple proof and mint sets with many of the coins I will need I guess I will be cutting some open. I know that makes several people here very happy.

I'm actually considering cracking one each of my duplicate 56 through 64 proof sets for the Philly coins in my albums. I've got loose '54 and '55 cents nickles and dimes that I'll use, also.  |

I crack sets too and that's something you do as dealer. Of course what year the set is has a lot to do with it. The 73-78 sets are a problem. The IKES can sell for as much as what the entire set costs but the other coins are hard to sell except the 75 and 76 cents do good 77 and 78 do okay. For several years a 1955 set you could bust apart and sell but you lost money if you did a 1956 that way. Some sets are problem sets like the dark pink box sets from 1984-1992. Several of those have developed problems especially on the cent and half dollar that as set they are junk. I thinks that why the values on those years have absolutely TANKED the WHAMMY is definitely laughing on that one. But then if the set has a problem cent and half and the other three coins are fine then you buy that set based on what you can sell those three coins for.

I just got 12 - 1969 sets, 4 - 1968, 1994, 95, 96, 97, 98. All 21 sets are going to get cracked open. |
