I picked up this coin that appears to have been run over by a train. It has the design of an 1872 Trade dollar pattern coin, but only 6 of those are known to exist. I got it as more of a novelty than anything else, did not think it was authentic, but now that I have had a chance to look at it it seems to be silver. All fakes/reproductions of this coin are reported to be magnetic, but this one appears to be silver. The guy at my local coin store says it is definitely silver, but no chemical tests have been done. Are there any known fakes/repros of this coin that were made in real silver?

It is almost certainly a mangled modern counterfeit, dollar patterns have been a big target for fakes. Magnetism or lack thereof is not definitive because it could be cupronickel or another white metal alloy. Have you weighed it?

However it doesn't appear to be complete. It looks like it lost a bit of the top when it was damaged.

IF it is silver, it'll lead you in a good direction at least. Why? Fake or not, you have the value of silver.

Soory but I think the top is complete. Look at that section on the reverse and you can still see the remains of the entire rim. (distorted as it may be. Even if some was ground off the obv it wouldn't account for that much loss in weight. Nearly 20% of the coin would have to be gone.
