I have this 26" long belt made from about 120 1894 Mexican 1/4 Real coins [silver?], with a larger cut-out 1894 coin buckle. Any thoughts on value? Download Attachment: Real.gif63.55 KB

Welcome to the Forum duncan-- WOW amigo, no tengo una idea--yo no se--pero--The fact that these babies were probably welded together, drilled together, attached together, the fact that all the coins were modified by the way they were attached, I would venture to say that it is probably worth alot less than if the coins were loose and free-- BUT, you never know, its value is what someone is willing to pay for it--IF you wanted to sell it amigo, how much would you want fer it--quanto?

Welcome duncan! Interesting piece of artwork. Have you ever had the coins authenticated? Must be a pretty heavy belt! Mike

Yes they're welded together 3 at a time vertically and attached at the top & bottom to a chain so it's kinda like a snake belt IF I want to sell it you'll be the first to know. It just came into my possession so not sure what I want to do with it. And my girlfriend's waist is not 26", or she'd be wearing it Download Attachment: belt.gif46.12 KB

Haven't had the coins authenticated, but I can't imagine someone finding 120+ reproduction little coins and putting that much work into putting this together.
It just came into my possession by accident [bottom of a box of unrelated stuff that I got at a house clearance]

If the coins are authentic, its value is the melt value of silver, the coins have no numismatic value !!

Hi Duncan, I realize this is a naive question- but are you sure they are mexican coins? Guatamala minted a 1/4 real coin about that time period and the obverse and reverse look identical to your pics: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...3459654&rd=1A Krause guide to world coins would confirm this. The guatemalan 1/4 real (and if Mexico was still minting them in the late 19th century- although on ebay completed auctions I also found 1/4 real coins which were bronze) was about 1 gm of silver I think- smaller than US3c silver. 120 gm (or so) of silver would be worth 20 some dollars... Cool belt, but I doubt the silver value alone is worth much. Numismatic value alas is not likely super large either. On the other hand, its a pretty cool belt! Don

Who will make the first belt out of a Full set of State Quarters, President dollars, First lady coins, etc.? LOL It's an interesting idea, but a pity what it does to the coins. The value in the belt would be in it's uniqueness and history, as a talking point. Since it's a form of "art" it is worth what ever someone is willing to spend to own it. A one off!

That's awesome! That sucker's gotta be heavy though- how much does it weigh? Don't wear that and try to go through a metal detector! Rachel [:p]

a-ha :: thanks :: I'm now sure they are Guatamalan coins because the buckle coin commemorates "Libertad 15 Septembre 1821" :: Guatamalan Independence
