This is something someone once told me. I told him "I bought a $500 bill off ebay for $725 + $5 shipping, and I support bringing back the $500 bill" and the person I told that to, said "No you don't. If they brought back the $500 bill, your $500 bill would lose value"

Then I had other people say that "No, those older $500 bills will always retain their current value"

So, what do you guys think? Would the value of older "small head" $500 bills go down if new "colorized big head" $500 bills came out?

I don't think they would. They will always have numismatic value in my opinion.

Nonsense,
The one you bought will never be made again. The person that told you that knows nothing about collector items or the value of collectors items.

Where the current collector's premium is less than the face value, the bulk of the real value is related to the real buying power of $500 worth of currency, cognisant of the rampages of inflation.

Older and newer $500 bills will always have $500 buying power, it's just that the real buying power reduces with time, as inflation takes effect.
Any notaphilic* premium would be related to the current notaphilic market.

*The banknote version of 'numismatic'.

A small part of the buyers are people who aren't collectors but still like to show off with a $500 note in their wallet. That part of demand would be lost. When following the supply and demand rules they would suffer a little bit in the price range. I wouldn't be concerned about that it would be very marginal if any.

notaphilic? You made that up? in that case or is it a real word? (English is not my native language so I am not quite sure)
Even when made up I like the sound of it!

No; I can't claim that I first 'coined' this word myself, unfortunately.
I first came across it in a banknote supplement to a numismatic magazine.

The noun is 'notaphily', or the love of (bank)notes.
