Don't know if anyone remembers that oddball I found and posted in the GTE thread... https://goccf.com/t/147253&whichpage=131

It had just been listed for auction through Heritage even though the auction was months away (it was today).

I grew attached to it over the months and so I bid. Paid more than I'd hoped to pay but I guess that's what happens when you become emotionally attached.

Excerpts from wikipedia:

Quote:
Tiberius Julius Sauromates I Philocaesar Philoromaios Eusebes, also known as Sauromates I (Greek: Τιβέριος Ἰούλιος Σα.ροματης '' Φιλόκαισαρ Φιλορώμαίος E.σεbής, Philocaesar Philoromaios Eusebes, means lover of Caesar, lover of Rome who is the Pius one, flourished the second half of the 1st century and the first half of the 2nd century, died 123) was a prince and Roman Client King of the Bosporan Kingdom.
...
When Rhescuporis I died in 90, Sauromates I succeeded his father as Bosporan King and reigned until his own death in 123. He was a contemporary of the Roman Emperors Domitian, Nerva, Trajan and Hadrian. Sauromates I continued his father's legacy of rebuilding the Bosporan Kingdom. In 68, Rhescuporis I had restored the Bosporan Kingdom, previously a part of the Roman province of Moesia Inferior, as a semi-independent Roman Client State. On coins, his royal title is in Greek: ''ΣΙΛΕΩΣ Σ'ΥΡΟΜ'ΤΟΥ or of King Sauromates.
...

See? A BospOREO!

It's another big bronze. Guess I'll post it in the ILBB thread too

Hey TIF, great find and better buy. It will sit nice in your collection. I see you are favoring the big bronze coins. When you going to get the gold? The problem with someone like you is that the mundane just won't do. It has to be creative and exotic, so I suspect if you were going to buy gold it would expensive or Kushan.

Funny you should say that, NoobieDoo. I had my eye on some Kushan gold this week. Didn't bid on it though.

Been buying too much though, gotta slow down. I have a specific theme I'm working on and a few of my bigger dollar purchases (like this) aren't part of that theme. Need to save my dough for the themed collection, getting close to complete. ('complete' being a relative and flexible thing)

Doubt I'll buy gold coins any time soon. Too expensive. I'd rather find less expensive oddities in bronze or silver.

This OREO is much too nice to eat! It is better off to be preserved, in a numismatic collection, by someone who appreciates it, like a good collector's wine.

To be honest, this is probably the best quality bronze of the Bosporan Kingdom I have seen. Museum quality.

In my experience, it is easier to find gold and electrum staters of the Rheskuporises 1 and 11.

I don't care how much you paid for it; it is a bargain at any any price, in this condition.
