It's a fake. The centre portion is a medallion issued by Sainsburys supermarket in 1999 - 2000 showing famous people. I think they were given free if you spent a certain amount at the till - they were sealed in a paper envelope and you didn't know which one you'd got until you opened it. They sold an album that you could keep the medallions in. Someone has inserted one of these medallions into a genuine outer rim from a 1998 £2 coin!

Here is one of the medallions alongside a genuine original £2 coin. Someone has gone to a lot of trouble filing down the medallion to make it fit!

I've never contacted ebay to report this sort of thing - if any more experienced CCF members want to do so, please go ahead!

Sorry the photo isn't great, but I was in a hurry and it should give you an idea!

Oh wow , thats very interesting ! Thanks for the explanation .... So given what you have said, the person who went to all that trouble make that is going to reap a tidy sum if the interest it has generated so far is anything to go by .....

This is amazing another fake sold as a collectible

Possibly someone else messed around with the coin and then spent it, and the vendor genuinely did get it in change...

Do you really believe the seller got that in his change.

I get phone calls every day asking about coins what are they worth

Truth is people check out ebay if they get anything be it a coin or book , record , medal etc.

A fool with money are easily parted

Been in the business for so long seen and heard so much crap

Millenium issue in 1998, did this guy not see that this is a little bit early for that?

Not really a 'fake', more a contrived 'fantasy', and as such, is probably legal on ebay.

Except, it's being totally misrepresented in the listing. The "coin" may be legal on ebay, but lying isn't.

Only 4 bidders to date, but still more than I would have expected, especially as one has a feedback of over 3000 and seems to dabble in coins?
