Hi guys,

Im already trying to clean a silver coin with a black layer on it (both sides) with ammonia/lemon/toothbrush for 3 weeks.. the problem is, the layer keeps on the coin on most of the parts! When I put it in the ammonia, it turned black for the first time, but couldnt rub more off after that day, same problem soaking it in lemon juice.

Do you have any experience with such coins?

Oh by the way its a denarius of Augustus with good detail, only its black!

Thanks!

I think I might be tempted to leave it as it is. I don't think you are going to get it back to "mint state" and you might start to damage it.

I wouldn't do anything more to try an clean this coin. From your pictures it has a really nice patina to it. I don't think you would get it to any nicer than what it looks now.

From your description in the first post, the impression was that the Denarius was encased in a black tarnish, which can be cleaned off with a long soak in Distilled Vinegar (White Vinegar).

From your second post with the photos of the obverse and reverse I reckon it is fine as it is.

Shiny, overcleaned Denarii, are not desirable.

Youre right.. I was hoping to get it in the former mint state but that will be impossible. I'm going to keep it in his current state.

Thanks for your replys, you all convinced me! :-)
