Yeah it is cool.... but the only Hobo coins I could see collecting would be those actually made by the hobos from the depression era coins. Those to me are the truly collectible hobo coins. The rest of the coins are people/artists hoping to make a buck...in this case literally.

Check on the U.S. Mint website for new rules and the last one is that melting or changing /defacing pennies or nickels is now consider crimes and will be prosecuted by the govt. I wonder if this is what would be included.

The melt ban on cents and nickels is strictly a preventative measure to ensure that those denominations are not withdrawn and melted so quickly as to create coinage shortages(similar to the ban on melting silver coins in the 1960s). Counterstamping, elongating, hobo-izing, and other alterations are perfectly legal as long as it is not done with fraudulent intent.

Technically those elongated penny machines are illegal, but the government isn't going to waste time, money, and resources to try to shutdown all of them.
