Tim1969: to the CCF!

Unfortunately, this is a bronze tourist copy of an Egyptian gold oktadrachm. (8 drachm)
The style of the reverse most obviously gives it away.

Some may have been tempted to gold plate them, just to make them appear just a little bit more desirable.

It may be a replica, but the coin it represents depicts a queen, not a king! The reverse reads Arsinoes Philadelphou in Greek, for Arsinoe II (316-270 BCE), wife of Ptolemy II, who was known as Ptolemy Philadelphus because he and Arsinoe were both husband and wife, and brother and sister.

That's great info guys, thanks. As I novice I am finding these forums valuable. We are enjoying researching and identifying the more obvious ones ourselves and posting on here the ones we struggle with.

Thanks again

Tim1969 Your 'coin' is well worth keeping. To have an original of one of these is to have a very rare gold coin that would be estimated typically at GBP 5,000 at auction.

Perhaps this piece could be your introduction in into the very interesting world of ancient numismatics. Scholars have earned their pHd's from Oxford in ancient numismatics!

Ancient coins need not be expensive: some very nice bronze coins of the the late Roman period can be had for as little as five pounds.
