There certainly are elk (Cervus canadensis) here in America, though what you lot across the pond call an "elk" we call a "moose" (Alces alces). Probably explains the non-committal motto of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, featured on this medal, referencing the genus names of both animals. Trouble with the medals is, until they are engraved with lodge and member numbers, it's hard to pin them down to place and time. Easier to classify your antlered ruminant ungulates.
