I have a few 1962's, that I have pulled from the mint sewn bag - maybe 5-10 that have a chalk-like line across the coins, but this is the first I have found that is actually carved into the coin itself.

The back side of Licoln's Head shows it runs about the same depth, and it also looks like there is a tread-style tractor line on each side of the line itself.

I did notice that the line DOES cut through the "N" in "IN" so it could have happened before or after the strike. I dunno if they use these lines for anything important.

Appears to be pre-strike damage.

I agree.
Since the "scratch" appears to go from the field right up to Lincoln's head that would strongly tend to indicate NOT post-Mint damage.
If that is truly the situation then die damage at the Mint would be the most likely cause.

Thanks for the replies. This was pulled out of a Mint Sealed bag, so it was done at the mint. I just recently found another with a finer line, etched/scratched into the surface.

I have seen a few coins that show the tractor style tread but no line.

If the tractor style tread is close to the date, then the date can be severely damaged.

This may be some sort of after strike damage off a conveyor belt that goes towards the bagging / out processing of the coin.

My son and I have searched well over 30,000 cents in the past three months and we have only seen this error on almost a dozen cents, all which have come out of this 1962 bag.

Here are a few more full sized pics of the ones with the lines engraved/etched in......
