i just won this coin in an auction. apparently this is the more expensive variety of the 1644 strike, although it is almost illegible due to the degree of wear. seller grades it as G+ to VG but I think it is AG at best. Also, stated weight is like 8 grams lighter and diameter 4 mm smaller, so could the degree of wear and damage really cause such a difference?

Wear can make a coin lighter, but not 8 grams lighter. A silver-dollar-sized coin that is worn or corroded to the extent that it loses 8 grams out of about 25 will be worn flat or corroded beyond easy recognition. Wear (specifically clipping) can also make a coin smaller, but the design details remain the same; a smaller coin should have details (such as parts of the legend) removed.

The calculation is approximately correct.

Loss of 4mm = loss of approx. 16% of the coin (coin should be 48mm)

Loss of 8 gms = loss of approx. 16% of the coin (coin should be 51.5gms)

so with all that considered, would this coin even retain any numismatic value, at least a fraction of the $295 in VG? I got it at a very cheap price if compared to its value in VG but I wouldn't proceed if it's not worth a thing regardless of its history.
