Hey guys,

I have here a 1638 French Double Tournois that looks kind of odd to me. The odd part is that the detail on approximately half the coin is very strong. The date is very clear and the detail in the figures hair (the high point of the coin) is very detailed. However, it seems the other half of the coin's detail has been worn flat. The coin is the same thickness all around so I think it is probably not because of circulation wear but a weak die strike?

Either way, tell me what you think caused this coin to look like this. I love these numismatic mysteries.

Thanks!

Weak strikes over a large area an be quite normal for low face value coinage of this period.
It is caused by the blank having varying thickness.
