It was introduced in 1887 as part of a move towards decimalisation - the florin, worth one-tenth-of-a-pound, had been circulating since 1849, and, after initial problems, was now popular. But the double-florin was generally disliked by everyone - a critic said that the reverse design looked like four tea-trays and pokers, and it could be confused with a crown, leading to its nickname "the Barmaid's nightmare" or "Barmaid's ruin".
