Dr. G.G. Wilkins whom Bowers describes as a "rascal" (he was accused of burning down a barn owned by "someone who had crossed him," Bowers writes, and passing counterfeit money). According to The Strange Career of Dr. Wilkins by Bowers: "By 1860, and probably for several years before then, Wilkins, a dentist in Pittsfield, N.H., advertised his trade by counterstamping coins in circulation, particularly those of the 1-cent denomination. The marking was done by taking a metal punch with the inscription DR. GG. WILKINS in a small arc, nearly a semicircle, carefully positioning it on the obverse of a coin placed on a small anvil, and hitting it with a hammer. Or, perhaps he had a small punch press of some sort, for surviving examples of his work were for the most part counterstamped with unusual sharpness and car   |

1851 French copper 1-centime. This 2-gram coin was replaced the following year by a 1-gram bronze coin of more modern design, bearing the portrait of Napoleon III. Keen observers may notice a little PMD on this specimen!   Edited by NumisRob

I must have mislabeled my 1851 Belgian 5 francs coin, so all I can show is a 5 Centimes coin. Back then, that was a massive 10g coin.  |

Interesting counter stamp, cointageous. Here is the 3 cent silver that got me into 3 cent silvers. It is so much better in hand than my pictures show.   |
