This 5 Francs coin, with the Hercules group on the obverse is the first issue of the second republic (1848 - Paris mint, very common). The first republic ended as Napoleon became emperor. The second (short lived) republic, started as King Louis Philippe was removed from office and ended with Napoleon III becoming emperor in 1853. The 1852 coins with Nap 3 on the obverse still mention 'République Française'. Report this Post to the Staff
