Great Britain One Shilling 1840. When it was new, this coin could have been used to purchase 12 new Penny Black stamps (the world's first postage stamps) to send a letter anywhere in the UK. At the time of the changeover to decimal currency, one shilling (5p) would buy three inland postage stamps. You would now need eleven 5p coins to purchase just ONE inland postage stamp!

I suspect this French medallion commemorates 1840 rather than the date of minting - but a nice illustration of the technology of the day

One Rupee 1840 from British India. A really nice coin and my eldest both from the Asian continent and the British empire. The closing of a chapter.
