Coins are usually counterstamped in inflationary times, but in 1796 the French Revolutionary government doubled the size of their copper 5 and 10 centime coins, so the new Decime (10 centimes) was the same size as the old 2 Decimes (20c)! Here's my Year 4 French 2 Decimes, counterstamped for 1 Decime under the currency reform of October 22, 1796 (Brumaire 3, Year 5).  Edited by NumisRob

Crocione, 1796, minted in Milano under Austrian rule. On the obverse emperor Franciscus II. The crocione (Kronenthaler in german) has been used throughout the Habsburg empire, covering several countries and regions of today's Europe.   |
