1794 Cinque Ports halfpenny, payable at Dover, Kent. Dover is just 22 miles from France and has been the main port for passenger ships to Continental Europe since time immemorial. The mid 1790s were the peak period for the issue of 'Conder' tokens: there was a severe shortage of copper and silver coins in circulation in Britain.  Edited by NumisRob

Kronenthaler, 1794 Austrian Netherlands, the last one minted in Brussels. 'Angelface' mintmark divides the date. Edge lettering: 'Lege et Fide'. All lettering is in Latin, avoiding the language choice among the many spoken in the Holy Roman Empire: extending from Belgium to Slovakia (and a small part of the western Ukraine) and from Germany till Northern Italy, Croatia and parts of Serbia in the south.   Most of the mintage had not left Belgium by the time it was overrun by revolutionary France, ending Austrian rule in 1796. A large part has been melted down to produce francs. Despite its mintage number, this Kronenthaler therefore has become rare. |

Double Liard 1794, Austrian Netherlands (today's Belgium, GD of Luxemburg and only little of the Netherlands). A 'Liard'(french) or 'Oord'(dutch) was a small copper coin. There were 216 liards to the Kronenthaler.  |

Mysilveryears - I love your Dutch gulden. It's a denomination that was still recognisably the same right up until 1980 when those awful Queen Beatrix coins were issued! 1793 halfpenny token from the town of Leek in Staffordshire:  Edited by NumisRob
