Kronenthaler 1793 minted in Kremnitz (mintmark B). Kremnitz used to be an important silver mine in the 18th century Holy Roman Empire. It was in Slovakia, so now the name has changed.



The legend is in latin, with plenty of titles and abbreviations. On the obverse: Franciscus II, Dei Gratia Romanum Imperium Semper Augustus, Germaniae, Hieronimorum, Hungarium, Bohemium Rex

On the reverse: Archidux Austriae, Dux Burgundiae, Lothariae, Brabantium, Comes Flandriae.

Especially 'Hieronimorum' meaning 'of the Jews' nowadays seems peculiar. It implicitly means 'King for all inhabitants'; antisemitism still was over a century away.

The reverse also mentions the regions of the Austrian Netherlands and allied french Burgundy.

Crocione 1792 minted in Milano, under Austrian rule. Emperor Leopold II on the obverse succeeded his brother Joseph II in 1790, but died barely two years later. Rumours of poisoning were never confirmed. Crocioni or Kronenthalers from the short reign of Leopold II are relatively hard to find.



Though the legend is the same as with other Kronenthalers, the edge writing depends on the monarch, here it reads:
"Pietate et concordia."
