Just saw your photos I am sorry that 1919d is a G grade at best and worth about $25 at best you are unlikely to get that as thats full blown retail and would be lucky to get $15 for it. I would still take the advice here take these coins in and have them evaluated by a good dealer. Like said before if he took the time to pick up one valuable coin the 1909s there is a chance there is more there as well.

Todd, You probably have some valuable coins if indeed your father has a genuine 1919 s vdb cent. Look also for a 1914 d and 1931 s cent in the collection that also could be valuable. As mentioned earlier condition is key to value in coin collecting. such as does your 1919 d half dollar look like this? or like this? If your 1919 d half was in the condition of the first photo it could be worth thousands of dollars but if it is like the second photo maybe $25.

Thanks for the suggestions. Granddad was a collector but he wasn't rich. He was a John Birch Society guy who was convinced that the Communists were going to take over and we would need silver/gold. I have to think that something worth $20,000 today would have been worth a lot back then and would have been "earmarked" for the family...by either my Dad or Grandad. For example, Dad's 40 gold Kruggerands have been in a safety deposit box for years. These coins I'm showing ya'll have been in a closet for years. This VBD penny is just in an album and is not marked valuable, but I'm as interested in the next hobbyist (granted this hobby is only 2 hours old for me) in uncovering any hidden gems.

Muddler. Thanks for the pics. This 1919D Walking Liberty is of the lower grade you posted. I can see the detail and the reason the value would be much more.

It sounds like to me what your dad or granddad considered valuable went into the safe (the Krugerrands) that he was earmarking for the family and what he was doing for fun and as a hobby just went into the drawer and the albums. He clearly didn't think the 1909s was that valuable or he would have stored it differently (its a nice looking specimen though I am not much of a fan of lincolns so my grading is very poor on them as I have never collected them). Everything from that page you shown is a G or a AG and my local coin shop would just have those coins in there junk silver box for $12 a piece. There is still a chance you might find something valuable though its worth having an expert check them out for you.

That 1909S VDB looks pretty nice! The next most likely category of value....Morgan dollars or a 1916d Mercury dime

The 09S VDB looks to be worth $1000's to me if it grades MS. Nice coin! But clearer pics would give a better idea. Also, be extremely careful handling it. No fingerprints.

Wow, I like the S-VDB! I live in Fort Worth and would be happy to refer you to my LCS if you want to take the set to someone based on personal experience and trust. I don't get kick-backs, don't worry. :) I've taken my Lincoln set to him before for appraisal, and I have been buying from him for years and trust his judgment and ethics. I know you live in Dallas, so not sure if you want to drive to the other side of the mid-cities area (he's in North Richland Hills), but if you want the info, let me know.

There's also a 1909 and 1909 VDB Lincoln? There's a full book of Mercury dimes 1916-1945 with the exception of the 1916-D and the 1942Over41? There's a full book of Franklin halves 1948-1963?

Your mercury set have the 1921, 1921-d,1931, 1931-d, and the 1926-s coins? If so and they are in nice shape...they bring above average values

All of those Mercury's are in the book. But some are worn more than the others.

There is one 1921 Morgan and one 1923 Peace Morgan. Both of lower grade quality.
Thanks all. It was fun to uncover some value here and we have a good story to share with the family regarding the 1909 S VDB Lincoln. I really appreciate everyone's help.

The 1909 SVDB cent looks to be in amazing condition and, as such, could be worth a significant amount. Be aware, however, that this is one of the most commonly faked coins out there (some people take a regular 1909 VDB cent and add a fake "S" to the front, for example), so I wouldn't get too excited until you've had the chance to get it checked out and verified. It sure looks nice, however!
