Again, I was tempted to buy a coin.
This time its an As of Germanicus, struck under Caligula!
I probably overpayed with 35 euros incl shipping but its again a coin I really wanted.

The portrait isn't that bad and the legend is quite good. The condition is almost simular as the claudius As.

Type : Roman Imperial
Issuer : Germanicus
Date Ruled : Died AD 19
Metal : Bronze
Denomination : As
Struck / Cast : struck
Date Struck : AD 37/8, under Caligula,
Obverse Legend : GERMANICVS CAESAR TI AVGVST F DIVI AVG N
Obverse Description : Bare head left
Reverse Legend : C CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS PON M TR POT / S C
Reverse Description : Legend around large S C
Mint : Rome
Primary Reference : RIC 035 (Gaius)

Nicer than mine which I got for a great price from a very angry Rufus. Germanicus was a very very popular guy. I forget who it was that had him murdered...he would have made an excellent emperor.

We was probably poisoned by the orders of Tiberus, his adoptive father.. it makes sense because he was a threat because of his popularity

I like it and wouldn't feel bad about paying 35. Ben I'm sure he would have been a better emperor than his son.

A very angry RVFVS ? We will let that one slide by the wayside !

A bit of toning will surely help this coin as it has been scrubbed down to the metal. Darkened it should be a bit more acceptable to you. While I understand your eagerness to pick up these early Imperial issues I still (and always will) urge patience. I am seeing some very nice deals these days for coins that most dealers would be charging much much more. Sometimes it is better to pay a few dollars (euros) more if the coin seems to have more potential than the seller has made use of ie uncleaned and/or a photograph which shows little of the positives and instead emphasizes the negatives.

I am still waiting on my Nero Claudius Drusus which did not arrive yesterday as I had hoped. While I have my fingers crossed on this one I also have high hopes. Despite the miserable seller photo I could determine a full 'hairline' across the bust which tells me it has good depth. An earlobe nostril and eyelid which tells me the detail is intact and most of the legend is barely readable. Now for $66 I don't expect too much ....... But I do have high hopes !

I understand Furius, my strategy is to buy when I see chances and sell it when I am able to buy a better example of such coin.
For now I am very happy with this coin, maybe after some years I see a real nice example for an acceptable price and I'll jump on it.
My goal is quality coins for a good price instead of quantity. I dont want too keep as many coins as possible.

Always pick quality over quantity. I have never regretted buying a higher grade when given the choice. I have on the other hand questioned my own judgement if I passed on an opportunity to buy something that makes my little heart go 'pidder pat' !
