I check into my hotel, grab my complimentary USA Today and would you look at that...front page:

"Flaws inflate some quarters' worth"

Sets of these three quarters (normal, high leaf, low leaf) are being sold in MS graded sets for $1,099. Seems most of them are turning out in Tucson, AZ.

This is good press for the hobby. More collectors coming in, more demand for quarters and all coins.

What amazes me about these is that the "low leaf" variety actually looks like a corn leaf. It's hard to believe that this is an error strike. Maybe someone at the mint decided to get creative?

From the USA TODAY front page article:

"...the Mint has improved technology and tightened its manufacturing operations [from 1995, the last major "error" when some Lincoln Cents had the DDO]. That has raised speculation that the extra leaves could have been intentional. Also raising eyebrows is the apparently accurate placement and design of the extra leaves. Plus the leaves are so clear that they can be seen with the naked eye, suggesting any changes to the die were more than mere scratches."

Fred Weinberg, a coin dealer in California and co-author of The Error Coin Encyclopedia, says enough questions have been raised that an intentional change can't be ruled out. Still, he says, "It's hard to believe that somebody would jeopardize their job to do that."

So far, about 1,000 have turned up, mostly in Tucson and some in San Antonio. Considering 453.2 million Wisconsin quarters were minted, so far these finds represent a very small population.

Stay tuned and check your change! Here are close pics of the leaves:

I checked all of my Wisconsin quarters at work the other day, and bummer... Not a single extra leaf among them. I'll keep checking- gives me something to do during the slow days.

We have been taking phone calls about these quarters already. Most are looking to sell. Looks like more hype than not. I have been warning my customers not to buy into this fad. With such a high mintage, the extra leaf coins could end up being $50 coins by years end. Now for those who own them, I tell them SELL, SELL, SELL

I think that's excellent advice, ND. If I had any, that's exactly what I would be doing.

Hype is NOT going away as ANOTHER article appeared today (2/10/05) on page 3 of USA Today's Business section. I thought that was odd since they ran pretty much the same story on page 1A just one day earlier. Must be a cheese head conspiracy...or a Green Bay Packer fan working at the Denver mint.

I still think it will be a fad. I think they're going to find that there are a lot more out there than originally believed and the prices will drop quite a bit.

This is the kind of thing I wouldn't mind having one of, but one would be enough. Just so I can say I have it, you know... If I can find it in circulation and pay face value for it, then I'll take it.

Having one would be great but not at the expense of %60 to $80 bucks! Finding one in a roll or in circulation would make it a keeper but I am not falling for the apparent media hype that has just begun. Most journalists don't have a clue about coin collecting and will jump on the "breaking" news as it is given to them and from that point on the "drama" explodes. I just can't believe the error collectors are searching so hard for something NEW to spend their hard earned money on?
Rest in Peace

What I want to know is when can WE expect our double eagles for being such great guys, not to mention, such great friends with our buddy Catman? Wanted to make sure I stayed on your official "gold give-away-list"! Sure don't want to slip off of that list!

Hey now, what about great girls? Just because we're the minority here... I had about five customers come in today and ask about these "extra leaf" quarters. I probably spent a good five minutes trying to convince this little old man that they're probably not worth anything more than face value- I guess he'd seen one for sale somewhere for some outrageous sum of money and was actually thinking about buying it.
