I just came back from the post office. I had parcels to pick up and to mail. I mailed a superman press sheet in large cardboard tube from AB to Man. It cost $18.25. I received 3 more Superman posters in big cardboard box it was$22 from Nova Scotia to AB.
Then I had two separate 1975 silver dollars in cases, wrapped in a little bubble wrap, placed in a small yellow envelope. From AB to Ont was $15 for jest over an Oz . Same package and contents going from AB to Que price $15.75. Now these are just silver dollars in the little leather wallet sent regular parcel.
Yet in aug. I sent a silver dollar 2011 in a capsule and padded envelope cost $2.75. I nearly fell over!! I must be missing something. The poster was larger and it was only $3 more.
How do people do it on ebay with charging a flat $6 for coin and case? I feel really scammed. I'll be lucky if I break even on these 2 coins. When I asked about the poster tube, reply it's light, well my coin was 1 Oz the wallet style holder a little bubble wrap. How can anyone afford to mail anything that's just over 2"? I'm still in shock. I can't image what it costs to send a Superman cube from BC to Nova Scotia!!
I'm starting to sell off older coins I bought last yr, so I'll have money for the new releases. I'm really sorting out what I want to keep more strictly!!
I can't figure out how the RCM ships coins in clamshells for $8?

I believe paypal gives a discount on expedited shipping but not on regular parcel. And as for those other companies they have business rates on shipping, if their losing on the shipping it's won't be as much. I'm sure the RCM have something worked out.

But I've notice the increase from over last year as well. They also removed the $100 of free insurance for small packet air which makes it now almost impossible to ship anything international for a reasonable price.

Being in Canada is a huge disadvantage when it comes to shipping... it's definitely one thing (not the only thing) our neighbours to the south do right.

On the other hand, USPS is in even worse financial shape than CPC. Yes, that 2cm thickness limit on regular mail can be a killer. Paypal gives a higher discount on Expedited than Regular parcel so if you're going that way Expedited is almost always cheaper. Alternatively, you can get a discount card directly from Canada Post that gives you roughly the same discount. Just make nice with your local postie. Also consider offering a shipping discount if the buyer agrees to just take the coin without the case. Some buyers like everything 'mint'. Others prefer to save money.

I might believe you. I've been waiting for some coins shipped from Niagara Falls, ON. to me here in the Detroit area since Oct 16th. Contacted the seller last Thursday and he blamed Canadian Thanksgiving for the delay. Will have to file an ebay claim if the package doesn't get here soon.

My question for those of you in Canada who ship to the US; is it common for such a long shipping duration? Does Customs hold up delivery?

I also got some vacation pamphlets mailed to me last week from Canada; the mailing cost was around $8.00 (paid by the tourism department). I feel so guilty that I feel I HAVE TO GO next year.

I found it was a minimum of 2 weeks shipping to the US. Not uncommon to go into the 3-4 week range. Unless it's shipped Expedited or Express or something that would give you a tracking number to follow it.

Oddly, when I've sent packages/letters with tracking, I've seen them get to the States in a day, then sit somewhere like Boston for another few days (or more) before it moves to the final destination. *shrug* So much about delivery time seems random. I just hate that we have to pay so much that it becomes limiting to try and do business via the post.

Don't really see what is wrong.

silver dollar 2011 in a capsule and padded envelope cost $2.75
=> likely unregistered/no tracking and mailed as an envelope as oppose to parcel

AB to Ont was $15 for jest over an Oz, to QC for $15.75
=> standard price for a parcel with tracking number, QC more expensive because farther and more tax

RCM likely gets a deep discount for shipping in Massive volume. ebay sellers that charge $6-7 either have the volume to support the low shipping price, absorbs the extra costs to sooth buyers unwilling to pay more, ships unregistered and uninsured or as lettermail, or don't know better and will burn when they get to shipping.

If you apply for a venture one card you can get a ~$1-3 off, approximately the same discount as paypal's shipping labels provide for expedited service.

Rest in Peace

I use CANADA POST Shiip-n-click and a little imagination on sizing until I get a price I can live with. You can then see all your options too.

While you can't send a coin in its padded case for $6 or $7 in Canada due to it being over 2 cms, you can send the same package to the USA as a small air packet without tracking or insurance for the same price.

For some reason, it is sometimes cheaper to send to the USA than within Canada. How com there is no small packet rate for Canadian Customers?

Careful with the 'imaginative' sizing. I've heard of packages getting return to sender with no refund of shipping label.

Not being able to ship small packet in Canada became a none issue for me after a few claims of non-deliveries that is impossible to prove otherwise without a tracking number

Try Canada Post "registered mail" - you're only supposed to ship documents, but what do they know (just don't declare a value) - has tracking and "signature required" on delivery (so you're fully covered by PayPal insurance) - very reasonable cost in Canada (usually around $10 bucks for average letter envelope) - and delivery times are excellent. To USA cost is usually around $18.

Shipping is crazy with CanadaPost! Alot of buyers on the auction sites(and we all know which site)want free shipping or reduced shipping.

If you send something of value to someone you should also have insurance which is $1.95 per hundred after the initial $100. Then if you want to make sure that the person actually gets it, $1.50 for signature.

As for registered mail, I have been told its less reliable than the other services.

This is a good thread started, would love to get more ideas from everyone on this subject

I had to send an incorrect COA on an item back to a dealer in Germany. They wanted it with a tracking number and said they'd refund the postage.

Well, it would have been $1.80 to send international lettermail or $17.10 to send with a tracking number. When I told them the cost they were shocked and I don't think they believed me until they saw the $17.10 shown on the envelope. In the end they did refund it but were surprised we have to pay so much for our postage.

@kwest, totally agree! Another thing, has anyone ever looked into separate shipping insurance. I have heard of it and wondered what the plus/minuses were
