Hello,

I was a little concerned about my new lucius verus denarius.
The sellers photo's were not very promising and I didnt like the black spots on it. Against the advice of some, I removed those spots and this is the result, I dont regret the cleaning.

I suspect the black scunge may have been a black wax, originally applied to accentuate the details and to help preserve it.
I agree that the coin is better of cleaned, without the black.

Renwax is sometimes used to beneficial effect to preserve and enhance bronze coins, but I can understand why some people don't like it. For me, it a bit like 'horses for courses'.

No regrets there !
The seller photos did little to sell the coin either. Spotting unflattering pics can be a good way of finding some nice buys too.
I have a few silver denarii ..... not many. I would try and tone it just a little.
Now that it is in its best condition a dash of tarnishing to give it a more 'venerable' look.
