I picked this up at an estate auction from a WWII/Korean vet. I think that is how it made it stateside (this and a belt buckle of a baseball scene with a note that says it was taken from a North Korean officer POW - pretty neat). Anyway, my research indicates it is a medal memorializing some sort of "suicide mission" undertook by some poor Japanese soldiers against the Chinese in 1922. I believe it depicts them running some sort of bomb into a wall or something like that. Anyone know anymore than that? Rarity? Value?

For the record, if my grandfather had brought stuff like this home from the war there would be no way in heck I would have sold it at auction. I love family history, then again I am also a pack rat.

Thanks

This Nikudan Sanyushi medal commemorates the 1932 Shanghai Incident. The "three human bombs" were supposedly three soldiers that had loaded themselves up with explosives and attacked a chinese position. In reality, an officer had forced a report to bolster Japanese moral and bring honor to his unit. The three soldiers mentioned in the report had actually died in a bayonet charge. The story took a life of its own and songs, medals, monuments, and other mementos were created to commemorate the "three human bombs". I can't seem to find any info on whether this particular medal is government or private issue, but I have seen others of different design that were private issue.
