I was finishing up on a Postumus which came along with a Carausius and a beaten up Constantine I. I bought the lot for the Carausius, which is really nice, and I was pretty pleased to have such a nice Postumus around (its got hoard encrustation on it). £4 for the 3 and the carausius is worth at least £10 - probably quite a bit more, its very nice in hand.

Well, I was looking at the reverse of the Postumus and saw the letters QUI[T] - I know Aureolus was very big on horses (EQVVS). Poked about in wildwinds and found out that this Hoard coin was issued by Aureolus!

AVREOLVS for POSTVMVS
IMP C POSTVMVS PF AVG
FIDES E-QVIT

Aureolus commanded the elite cavalry for Gallienus. But he messed up when sent to deal with Postumus - its theorised that he let him go. He was demoted and relagated. He took control of some of the army and revolted - but when Gallienus returned to give him what for, Aureolus was pitted again the Cavalry he put together - an elite fighting force built from scratch by himself turned against him - this coin is ironic and a little sad - FIDES EQVIT - Loyalty of the Cavalry.

No word on how rare Aureolus is...anyone got a clue? And Yeolde, you might want to poke about for one in your hoard coins. You might also be able to work your magic on this thing's reverse.

Very nice find. His coins are not common at all and are considered scarce.

Im going to ask the seller about where they came from. Might be a whole Aureolus hoard sitting out there...

I also decided to look a bit closer at the Constantine I and thats also a rare type, minted in London. Its in shoddy condition though, so its not worth anything. Its a COMITI AVGG NN. Seller mustve known that he was selling rare coins.

Great story and coin Ben. I personally would get the coin under a microscope and very carefully remove the encrustations ..... they are on top of the patina, if that makes sense and it is basically just sandy dirt and copper oxides from other coins in this case I think.

A few better coins in the hoard coins and some not so good, I love the Salus rev and the Gallienus antelope/gazelle has silvering left on it. No postumus other than the 30 bought seperately. British museum cleaned enough to ID...

Is this an 'Aureolus' too ? Could be I think....found in the recent batch I purchased....although I am a little fussy to call it anything other than a Postumus....

Is the Salus reverse the Carausius? I'd really like a Carausius Salus someday! (It's a long story)

Philadelphian, Sorry, do you mean is a Salus reverse on a Postumus a Carausius? or a Salus reverse in general?

I am a little confused?
Are we talking about Postumus coins with Salus rev?
There are rare rev types of Salus, such as the Aesculapius with snake entwined staff..

Yeolde, Phil is looking for a Carausius with the SALVS AVG reverse type. None of those have come my way, unfortunately. But 2 Carausius VIRTVS AVGS sitting around, oddly.

If you keep that eye open for me, Ben, I've got a Spinner 50 cent fractional note that'd like to cross the Atlantic, if you're still enamored of old US currency. Not that it alone would cover the bill for a Carausius Salus.
