How do you determine whizzing as opposed to some other method of polishing?

Um polished but to ndwlegals question. A) Whizzing isn't always polishing. B) I'd just say polished for this one. Would go as far as to say whizzed.

The notes said "cleaned." Does that broad brush cover polishing too? Just curious what OP meant when polishing was mentioned. To me since 'cleaned' was mentioned, seller is off hook, and it could mean almost anything.

Whizzing is done with a (relatively)soft wire brush and so you will see - perhaps only under magnification - many lines running parallel. You will also see that the polishing gets less aggressive around raised details for fear of damaging the detail.

Quote: Does that broad brush cover polishing too? Yes, with the understanding that all of these terms are used subjectively in the absence of any "rules" regarding specific definitions. "Cleaning" broadly encompasses (to me) just about any operation one could perform which, well, makes a coin look cleaner than it did before. I define "whizzing" as requiring the prerequisite of a powered, rotating cleaning tool. That could either be wire or cloth. It characterizes by a truly abnormal, smooth and bright surface usually covering fields and devices equally. Whizzing allows you to get closer to the field/device intersections, so it'll be harder to detect in those areas than hand-cleaning ("polishing" being just an advanced stage of hand-cleaning). Additionally, whizzing will tend to radius edges which would otherwise be sharper (unlike hand polishing). Aside the fact that the seller honestly described the coin as cleaned, it seems plain in the images. Given the excessive lighting used - even though the details are nice and sharp; I'm not complaining about image quality - it's tough for me to confidently decide what happened to the coin, but it sure presents the appearance of a whizzed coin. And note, hairlines are less-likely on a whizzed coin than a hand-cleaned one. So, yes, OP, this one has been polished. In fact, I'm going to contact the seller in hopes of getting permission to use those excellent images in future discussions of cleaning.

I am not so sure that it hasnt just been dipped. Witht he angle and lighting, I cant say for sure it is polished. For sure cleaned.

Reevaluating it, and looking closer, I'm going to back off my suggestion of whizzed. Polished/dipped out/etc for sure, though.

I see it at least as dipped. There's no difference in the toning in and around the devices.
As for additional cleaning methods, who cares after it's been dipped.

Nothing wrong with dipping, everything wrong with over-dipping AKA dipped out. This coin is, imho, dipped out. Cleaning leaves some residuals buried in the recesses, over-dipping strips everything. This is stripped.

Coin is not polished or whizzed IMO Over dipped and stripped at this point...the lighting adds an effect of bright clean surfaces
