Can you spot anything special about this coin? I am told it is rare. Is there a horseman missing? The one being speared?

The one being speared is sat on the fallen horse, you need to tilt your head to the right as the die alignment is crooked. The one doing the spearing is in the top right. Its a very small coin, with a tiny flan, but I am not an expert, so cannot spot anything, unless its a barbarous imitation?

Thanks YOC. So there is nothing special or unusual about it? I ask because it belongs to a friend of mine, he has been told it is rare, I don't know whether it is constantius II or constans as the legend is missing.

I don't know that I have helped PP? There may be something out of the ordinary which I do not see... My first impression was that it looked to be crude and struck on a very small flan....but I am sure one of the other members may be able to spot something.

It looks like a typical fallen horseman from the Siscia mint.

I have just looked at Doug Smiths info on this type. It seems 4 rev types are common Late Roman Bronze Coinage(LRBC) by Carson, Hill and Kent (page 108) recognized four design groups of Falling Horsemen based on the pose of the barbarian. These are: FH1 Kneeling Horseman kneeling on ground before horse FH2 Sitting Horseman sitting on ground before horse FH3 Reaching Horseman on horse turning and reaching back toward the soldier FH4 Clutching Horseman on horse slumping forward clutching horse's neck On your friends coin reverse, the barbarian does not look to be doing any of these, and judging by the crude flan and poor die engraving, I would say it could well be a barbarous issue. Doug Smith says that good Barbarous issues were only slightly worse than bad official coins, so its difficult to tell the difference sometimes.

Looks official but on a tiny flan...Im not seeing anything ground breaking. I do have a FEL TEMP somewhere which is retrograde.

ben, which of the rev types listed above do you think it most resembles, I do not think its close enough to FH4 to be genuine? But I also know that variations exist.....

Thats a clutching horseman and much too nicely rendered to be barbaric. I've not seen many well done clutches...a lot look this way. Ill take a poke at my nicer FEL TEMPs and see what I can come up with.
