Having discussed a different style of Fel temp coin yesterday, I was driven to clean an example which was sat around covered in hoard 'green' for some time. I have to say, I am very pleased with the results and wanted to share what is in my opinion, and despite not being entirely centrally struck, the best one I have seen of its type. (I am sure better ones must exist)....

LRB's and the "Fel Temp" series tend to get sniffed at by collectors of typical Roman coins, such as a Hadrian Sestertius, etc etc. However the "Fel Temp" series was issued for the 1,100 years anniversay of the founding of Rome.
Did "Happy Times" return? Not really, but that is the art of Propaganda that coins have always had.

Not quite FDC, but very close. Beautiful coin. Wish I could find one as nice as this.

You ought to clean up more of your hoard! Dig out any nicer/rarer coins and give us a show. And if you have any Jovians...
And look at that detail on the boots...I doubt any finer depiction of a roman boot exists.

Yes, I love the boots and the spear head......The reverse was much more encrusted than the obv, which was pretty good anyway. You are right , not quite FDC.... Sadly one to go...but nice photos stay with me and I have had the pleasure of admiring it 1st hand for several months.

This cant have circulated at all...its entirely possible that the only 2 people to have touched this coin's surfaces is the guy who retrieved it from the die and you.
Im about to put together some nice coins for an emperor set. If you feel like being a pal, you could help me with some nice busts for the Constantinians! I've got a doozy of a Constantine II but the rest are not so nice.
Also, when did Constans get such muscley legs?!

A great example of the type - it must be interesting to evaluate a whole hoard rather than just whats left after half a dozen people have cherry-picked it as we see so often on ebay. Do you have any of the info as to what was in your hoard and in what quantities, time-span etc?

Both coins pictured on this thread are not from my hoard.....but from another large group I was able to purchase a large quantity from uncleaned.

"FDC" (Fleur De Coin - as applied to modern proof coins) is a term not usually applied to ancient coins. I have seen Roman aureii in the British Museum that would be graded in modern terms as "FDC", but they grade them as 'As Struck'. These bronzes are 'AS Struck', or very close to it!

FDC was used to make the title more interesting.....I always describe coins when selling as...'as struck' if they meet the grade. Mr S on Forum coins has recently referred to a few of his ancients as FDC.

I think of an FDC ancient coin as not only minty-fresh, but lacking any problems whatsoever, of superior strike (e.g., great centering, good strong strike, etc.), and most importantly, being of superior style. I've only ever seen a few ancient coins that meet all of my criteria, and I've seen a lot of great coins... This one almost (but not quite) makes the cut: cngcoins com / Coin aspx?CoinID=199626 (sorry, you'll have to replace spaces with . since I cannot yet post links here).
Best, John
