I saw something going in under a minute on ebay from a regular seller and put in (what I thought was) a lowball bid on it, basically on a whim, and darn if I didn't win. The only thing is I don't know exactly what I bought. Anyone have any insight? I'm just praying the dollar is exactly made of silver. I panicked a little when I noticed the literature didn't exactly explicitly say it was silver. Did I make a blunder on this one? Like pulling the trigger when you hear a sound in the woods without seeing your prey. Not a good idea. So what's the verdict?

Addendum: Looked it up and I believe the dollar is made of silver, as I originally assumed, unless they also made a cupronickel version of this set.

BStrauss,

Thanks. I'm not really a major collector of US coins or silver dollars. I've tried multiple times to win the 2001 $1 Buffalo coin proof but have always been outbid. Last I checked, that was the most sought after of the US silver dollar commemoratives. I guess I was a bit worried about the Lewis and Clark set because most people advertise silver as a selling point and the metal content wasn't mentioned, which made me briefly think that this might not be silver.

It's legit. The special set with the pouch was a value added version... the regular one was here: http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs...n=LewisClark

http://moderncommemoratives.com/200...lver-dollar/, total proof mintage was 351,989 (not clear if that includes the 2 50K special options or not)

The issue price of your unit was #120 vs. $35 or $39 for the proof coin. Also see http://www.numismaster.com/ta/insid...gEntryId=390

The one I will be receiving was $60 with free S&H. I think they normally go in the mid-$70's for most of the auctions I've been following of late.
