I thought this one leaned towards md, but the S in States in the reverse just looks a little odd to be md. It also is present in half of the word of America, though not as strongly as in States. Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That is classic Machine Doubling.
The lower or shelf looking area is Machine Doubling.

Doubled dies tend to have the letters and numbers thicker than normal.
