I put together a collection of decimal pennies today (1971-1999) and it involved trawling through about 500 pennies, sorting them and selecting the best example from each date. 4 hours labour and I still have another decade to go.
How do you guys do this with roll hunting? It's such tiresome work. I suppose it's nice to have a collection at the end of things but boy is it ever boring.

The point of roll hunting, is the thrill of the hunt. If I wanted those coins but hated CRH, I would just not bother with it and buy the coins I want. I imagine that it must be boring for you Brits because you've hardly got any interesting coins left in circulation, with the demonetization and all. It's different in America. We've never had a demonetization, the government doesn't pull silver, and you can find very old and rare coins with some searching. I found a 1911 Wheat cent last weekend. My oldest find is an 1898 Indian Head cent. I kind of feel bad, I couldn't imagine the oldest coin you can find dating back to the 70s.

I dont mind it for certain things since worse case you end up with exactly what you started. I can only do a few rolls at a time though before the fun wears off.
I wont do anything smaller than a nickel any more though. Reading 200+ penny dates and mint marks in a row can get to be pretty brutal.

Don't stress yourself. Only crh when you want to do it. And if say you don't like pennies try a different denomination untill you find something that is right for you. I only do pennies, nickles and dimes. I like the thrill of the hunt so I don't usually bother with varietys but try finding something that you like to do.

Thats an interesting collection you are putting together Demarco ! I think you killed yourself by doing 4 hours, this sort of stuff needs to be done gradually over time therefore it doesn't feel like a chore ..... I think the saying the end justifies the means could be applicable to roll hunting Just out of interest how many pennies from 1974, 1975 , 1982 and 1984 did you find in that lot you searched ?

@DaytR
Thanks. Since pennies have been minted is almost every year since 1971 I thought it would be a fun and easy collection to complete. It's a shame that there is no circulation issue from 1972.
All the other dates I found multiple coins for, although naturally coins from the 1970s and 1980s were a little scarce. 1982 was a noticeably rare date. I think I only found 4 copies of that coin.

OK, so you have some data to play with too. Match up mintage against your findings and estimate survival rates.
But seriously, people do it in front of the telly, basically ignoring the visuals and having the sound track as background noise. SEVERAL programs make a lot more sense that way...

There's a difference between finding a coin at a coin store and buying it and finding a coin in circulation while roll hunting + getting it for face value. Its kind of a invisible difference but if your a true collector you will know what I'm talking about.

Well sadly we don't have any coins of real collector value in circulation. That said, I've now practically completed my 1 penny collection. Only years I'm missing are 1972 (proof only year) and 2011, 2012 and 2013 which should be easy to find.

Thats awesome news Demarco , glad to hear the collection is almost complete ! Funny enough, speaking of 1972 I have hoped and dreamed of getting a `72 penny in the change but alas still nothing , I would bet there are are one or two out there ......

I have fun doing it. I can kill an entire day going through a $25 box of cents. In fact I am going to pick one up on my way home tomorrow just in case it rains and I can't go metal detecting over my 4 day weekend.

In Canadian pennies, you could always have had fun picking out Laureate Elizabeth II, both King Georges, American pennies and other wacky foreign coins. Other countries, I guess, wouldn't be as interesting to someone used to seeing those coins - although I would absolutely love to pick through some coin rolls from certain commemorative-heavy countries, like Thailand (so many 10-baht commemoratives...).

Unfortunately penny roll hunting in Canada is coming to an end. Do you still get rolls of them, nalaberong?
