I didnt see any big warning signs, but I'm not familiar with the issue. Often, I see the fakes of these caught out by the style of the eyes, so perhaps someone can expand on that.

From the pictures I don't see anything wrong with the coin. My only question is why is the bid so cheat? This is one of the most copied coins every produced. As long as the bid isn't too high it might be worth a bid or two.

I'm scared, but just because there are so many fakes, and I can only spot the bad ones....but get an expert opinion.

An Athenian Owl is one of those coins that I would have to get from a respected dealer or auction house simply because I won't ever do enough research in it to discern fakes. It is just one of those coins to have and admire for me, not to read about.

The type is very often faked. However, this example shows no overt signs of being a fake. The opening level is cheap because ebay auctions in Europe are often actual auctions where the market decides the price, unlike so many US ebay auctions where the opening bid is already high. His other coins seems authentic. My guess is it will go lower than the same coin would in a big-name auction because it is hard to be sure it is genuine. The knowledgeable buyer who is confident it is okay can probably pick up a bargain, and it is is not okay, he can hope to return it for a refund. But, there is a risk and bids will be lower because of it.

Best to buy from a respected dealer who stands behind all they sell. That's where I got mine.

What bothers me most about this auction? The dark pictures...it's hard to see enough detail that might spell a copy. I almost wonder if that's intentional?

I respect ALL of the above opinions.
From the sum total of these opinions, the correct buying policy can be ascertained.
Good to know that the CCF is alive and healthy.
