My family has been with the bank for as long as I can remember so they know me very well. Even then I can still only get a box every couple weeks and haven't found any anywhere else.

The penny habit is a bit tough to break, but its nice not to get them.
I went over to Canada this last weekend, forgot to round down and handed the cashier the nickel to cover the 0.01 part of the price. He smiled and said don't need that and rounded down.

thats better than what happened to my wife. I had a box of discard cents that I had already gone through and told her to spend some when possible.
she handed 3 cents to the dollarstore cashier and they threw them in the garbage, saying "theyre not worth anything"

I suppose we can go buy boxes of US pennies and we can sift through those for Canadian cents for awhile...lol

Nice obituary (if there ever was one) but surely it should have said " the penny is survived by the nickel , dime , quarter, loonie and toonie"

daytr, it sort of does, kind of.
"The penny will be missed by the other members of the Canadian coinage system, which are now expected to be more in demand."

That's pretty rude what the clerk did your wife, wazza. First transaction at the beer store I had a cent with me and I asked what can be done with it. Clerk said, "Here's what we can do with it" and promptly dropped it into the charity canister. The second stop where the clerk was helpful was Taco Bell. He was the one who explained the rounding system. I love the fries at Taco Bell in Canada... LOL. Wish they would serve them here in the US. Looks like the 5 cent coin is now becoming the new 1 cent in Canada. The charity box was full of them. I think we need to consider rounding to nearest 10 cents like New Zealand here in the US. All we need are 3 coins really. A 10 cent, a downsized new 50 cent and 1 dollar.
