The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are located in the Indian Ocean and are 27 coral islands in a group, with a total land area of approximately 14 square kilometres. The Islands are low lying and mostly covered with coconut palms. The Islands form a typical horseshoe-shaped atoll surrounded by a coral reef. Each Island has rough coral beaches to the seaward side and sandy beaches and mudflats on the lagoon side. The total population of the Islands is approximately 600, with only two of the 27 islands inhabited. The Islands are a territory of Australia (Purchased in 1978 for $6.25 million dollars Au) located about 3,000 km northwest of Perth. The 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c coins are silver coloured while the $1, $2 are gold coloured and the $5 is Bi-metal. These coins are Non-Circulating legal tender as regular Australian coinage is used on the Islands. The mintage for each of these coins is 5,000. The 5c piece has a thorny Seahorse

LOL, I have two sets I bought in 2004 when they were first issued. I haven't seen them around since.
The only other set of 'coins' from Keeling Cocos were done in 1977. They had a 5c, 10c, 25c, 50c, Rupee, 2 Rupee, 5 Rupee, 10 Rupee, 25 Rupee and 150 Rupee coins that year.
Otherwise there were a number of Tokens made in 1913 called "Plastic Ivory" whatever that is and Modern token coinage (Modern plastic) made in 1968.
I've never seen any of the older coins/tokens.

G'day, I live in the same federal electorate as the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, but don't expect to get there any time soon. Where were these coins minted ? Peter in Darwin

I considered buying the set when they came out in 2004, but I'm yet to be convinced of the "legal tender" nature of these coins. The Cocos-Keelings don't have an autonomous territorial government; they're administered direct from Canberra. The sales spiel I read when they were released said the coinage was authorised by the Cocos (Keeling) Islands Shire Council, the only local government on the islands; but Australian shire councils are local government; they have no authority to issue money, any more than municipalities and counties in the USA can. quote: ...there were a number of Tokens made in 1913 called "Plastic Ivory" whatever that is...
The 1913 tokens were made of "ivorine", a celluloid-based imitation ivory.

Brissyboy got this information from the RAM back in 2004........
"Thank you for your patience. I have made further enquiries about this matter. Cocos (Keeling) Islands are a territory of Australia. I am advised that the Currency Act 1965 applies to this territory and the only legal tender coins in the territory are those issued under this legislation. As the items in question are not issued under the Currency Act 1965 they cannot be legal tender coins.
Regards Vivienne Thom"
and
"They were struck by the Roger Williams Mint in Attleboro, MA." from Joel Anderson
The 5,000 sets were sold out in an hour. (From a downies advertisement)

Does this statment mean that you really don't need both sets and are thinking of sending them to the Massachusetts?
