Hi all! I am curious about the Royal Canadian Mint's alloy recovery program. What are they doing about all the American coins that they must be gathering from our circulation? Are they being melted for their content as well, or is the USA purchasing back their own coins? I know it is illegal to melt US coins in the USA, but is this what our mint is doing here in Canada? Sorry if this question has been answered elsewhere in the forum before, but I have searched and haven't been able to find a conclusive answer. Thanks!

I don't know for sure but my guess is they are melting everything.

If they are melting our coins, we may have to declare war on Canada. Hehehe.

Our dime and quarter are markedly different and I am sure get sorted out and sent back to the States. Both of your post-silver alloys are magnetic but ours is not. The 5 cent is the one that could be hard to sort out. Canada used the same alloy as us from 1982-2001 and some in 2006. I remember your 5 cent from those years working quite well in our vending machines. I would hope the American ones get sorted out and sent back. Our one cent coins I could care less what they do with those useless things.
I am betting we will soon change alloy and go to your plated steel composition for our 5 cent fairly soon. Hopefully we get rid of the cent as well.

I'm doing my part, when I search my boxes of cents I put all US cents in a bag and when I get $20 to @25 I take it to my US bank. This takes me about 5 to 7 boxes.
