Is it against the law to own a fake out of circulation coin? The reason I ask is I may buy (for a very low price) a fake, knowing it is a fake, so that I can have something real in my hands to compare unknowns against. Any thoughts on this strategy?
In America, it is illegal to create or import counterfeit coins, and to own machinery (coin dies) capable of creating counterfeit coins. Actually owning or possessing counterfeit coins is not illegal. However, selling them is illegal unless they have "copy" stamped onto them somewhere. So while you may not be breaking the law, the person offering to sell you fake coins almost certainly is. Unless that person is in another country, in which case it is you breaking the law by importing them.
