I am interested in starting a Civil War Bank Note collection. Any tips? I do not know a lot about bank notes. What would be a good Southern Bill to focus on? Which ones would you avoid? etc.

You should definitely consider looking at the Confederates for your collection. Some really nice examples can be had for under $50. And there's so many variations, that it will keep you interested for a long time. And finally, if you needed to sell your collection, you will have no problem finding an interested buyer.

Thanks, I have seen there are a lot around. Could you give me an idea of some "Hot" picks to get started? Also what should I look for in terms of fakes?

amida17 posted a link to a good site. The facsimile (modern fake) notes are also listed there.

The Union's legal tender notes are expensive! Get the checkbook ready and buy only notes certified by a reputable grading service, IMO.
